The Peace Torch Foundation & The Sebastopol Rotary Club
Widows Vocational Training School 2003-2004 OUR MISSION:Torch of Peace (De Solay Daywa) is a non-governmental, non political, non partisan humanitarian organization seeks to help the people of Afghanistan to recover from the hardship of war, to protect them from the continuing dangers of ignorance, sectarianism and racism, and to foster the participation of Afghan women in the new economy and government of their country. Afghanistan has been torn by political conflict and by ethnic hatred between the Uzbek, Hazara, Tajik and Pashtun ethnic groups. The situation for women and children has become intolerable. De Solay Daywa seeks to foster equality and dignity for all Afghans, and offers relief, care and education without discrimination. The Foundation makes grants of aid to the poorest elements of Afghan society. All gifts go directly to recipients in Afghanistan. In some cases these grants are to individuals and families, to meet their most urgent survival requirements. The Government of Afghanistan has authorized Torch of Peace (De Solay Daywa) to open clinics in Herat, Kandahar, Mazar-e Sharif and Jalalabad. The Torch of Peace (De Solay Daywa) adheres to a strict, auditable, discipline of high contribution efficiency and low fund overheads. De Solay Daywa is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution, and does not endorse or oppose any causes, beyond its stated desire to help the men, women and children of Afghanistan. We hope that our many friends will want to join us in this work. OUR VISION: Make an effort to overcome race and language favoritism and partiality among Afghans in Afghanistan as well as abroad in order to maintain a one nation Afghanistan. Problem: Women have been severely held back from both educational and work opportunities during the last twenty years of war and especially during the Taliban years. There 40 – 70 thousands of widows in Kabul as a result of the continuous fighting over the past 23 years among which only 10,000 is covered by the humanitarian organizations. In addition, poverty led these widows to beg on the streets with their children, and in many cases were strained to live on the streets as well. Those few with homes may not in fact be widows but are the sole support of their children and husbands who have been crippled in the wars of the past. Each widow has at least 4 children or more who are malnourished and are begging and/or selling newspaper in the streets with less or no clothes and food in freezing Kabul weather.
Sponsor/Partner organizations: 1. Rotary International 2. Hayward Sunset Rotary Club 3. Sebastopol Rotary Club 4. Los Altos Sunset Rotary Club 5. Peace Torch ( De Solay Daywa) Foundation.
Our Response: Torch of Peace with cooperation of Sebastopol Rotary club is going to launch a Peace Torch (De Solay Daywa) widows vocation training school for 500 widows in two districts of Kabul city to empower widows earn a living and encourage them send their children to school rather than begging on the streets. The project has two main sections: 1. Sewing 2. Baking Sewing: The sewing center is established for the targeted widows to train them with sewing and marketing skills in order to lead their lives I a longer term instead of begging on the streets. Commercial as well as individual sewing machines will be provided for the widows to make clothes and sell their product in the local marketplace. Baking: the need for food for these widows is even greater than the clothes. Torch of Peace established a baking center in which the widows will be trained to make bread using commercial ovens provided by the Torch of Peace and Sebastopol rotary club. This project will in one hand generate employment opportunity for the widows to make a living, on the other hand will produce bread for Kabul civilians specially widows.
