DO YOU RECOGNIZE THE woman on the left in this photo? That's Sophia Omar, owner of Café Sophia in the Charleston Center in Palo Alto. She is the, founder of De Solay Daywa (The Peace Torch Foundation.) The goal of this organization is to raise money for' food, health care and education in Afghanistan. Next to her is Ghulam, Farooq, who manages a program for the CARE Foundation (originated over 50 years ago to provide relief to Europeans devastated by WW II.) He is now based in Afghanistan and he is working to restore community ownership of primary schools by training teachers, providing materials and enrolling students. These two held a dinner at Cafe Sophia on May 12th, to form a partnership between the organizations and will, host a fundraising event on June 8th, at the Palo Alto Elks Club to raise funds for a medical clinic in Afghanistan. The goal is to raise $ 10,000 and the tax deductible $50 donation will go directly to the fund. Come enjoy Afghan food, Costumes, videos and talk. For more information, call Sophia at 650 852-9220.
